Daniella, our WSWL Outreach & Special Events Assistant and LEAD Alumna, shares with us more about her experience (in Spanish and English) supporting our Spring 2022 We Speak We LEAD series, held in partnership with the We Speak NYC team of the NYC Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs.

What is it like to be a woman who arrives or lives in New York in search of new opportunities?
I am a professional, but I do not speak English fluently.
I speak a little English, but I’m not a professional and I don’t know how to enter the labor market in a city like New York.
I can communicate in English, but I don’t know how to make interpersonal relationships with a work focus.
Probably these are thoughts that as an immigrant woman you have when you come in search of the American dream, or because of things in life you simply end up living in the capital of the world or in the Big Apple.
It doesn’t matter what country you’re from, or what religion you practice, New York is so diverse and multicultural that even if you feel that its huge streets, buildings and seas of people are going to swallow you, it’s just a small world within our universe, with big and amazing opportunities waiting for you and me. And I include myself because I am also an immigrant like you. I arrived four years ago, without knowing how to start or how to resume what I had been doing in my country professionally and academically.
With a highly professional level of my native language (Spanish), and a medium level of English that only allowed me to talk about everyday life with my friends, I wondered, like your dear friend, how to go back to work? Can you work here?
And it is that opening the opportunity to meet new people in this wonderful city, is the first window for all the doors that later begin to open. I am a great seeker of communities and explorer of cultures that always serve as a bridge to cross new intellectual and professional paths. That’s how I got to know the community of New Women New Yorkers. Through a friend, I entered one of the different programs with the sole purpose of re-learning how to work in this country.
Today I think that the most exciting thing about having participated in NWNY as a “student or trainee” is to give a testimony of courage and confidence and say that if you can start over, that you can learn more than you know. That there are opportunities even if you don’t have money. That we are immigrants but New York embraces us. But certainly to extend a warm invitation for you to learn about the different programs that NWNY offers, among them, We Speak We LEAD, a free online workforce development and professional English learning program for immigrant women that is offered to through a collaboration of New Women New Yorkers and We Speak NYC at the NYC Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs.
Today, I am a part of the NWNY team, supporting its Spring 2022 We Speak We LEAD (WSWL) program. As the WSWL Outreach & Special Events Assistant, I have witnessed a 2-month series of 16 interactive job readiness workshops that support and prepare some 25 participating women from different parts of the world who are looking to enter the New York City workforce or pursue an education by helping them improve their professional English and gain confidence. Like New Women New Yorkers’ flagship LEAD program, participation in We Speak We LEAD provides access to group soft-skills practice and networking sessions with company partners, and one-on-one support in the form of resume building, interview preparation and professional advice.
Wasn’t all of this what you’ve been looking for or wondering about?
As part of the We Speak We LEAD support team, from the first session on the program, I was moved to remember myself and see myself in each of the women who applied to belong to this incredible community. Some women were shy, others silent but enthusiastic, while others were as excited and full of life-saving questions. It was like they were on top of a high mountain seeing a hopeful panorama while listening to Arielle Kandel, NWNY Founder & CEO, speak more about the development and content of the workshops.
During the classes or workshops, I have assumed a supporting role for my fellow WSWL team members, Jan, Montse, and Talita. And I have become the ears and eyes that fly over each workshop on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 am to 12 pm, and to tell the truth, I focus on the responses and opinions or comments of each of the participants, all with such different stories but that are joined at the end with a word called “dreams.”
Between group activities, they open space to share the happiness they feel being part of the NWNY community; they are inspiring, interesting women, with amazing and highly valuable contributions. The most moving thing is that when one of them participates and shares the tasks, the others applaud in unison and are grateful to feel inspired by each other’s experiences. We Speak We LEAD, unites cultures, unites us as women, does not divide or generate competition, and this is what you take with you when the program is over. An amazing and diverse group of friends that will become like a second family. . I am sure that each of these women can get where they want to go, some very good writers, poets, coaches, lawyers, nurses or doctors in the best hospitals, teachers, artists, or anything they want because they have all the potential to be great New Yorkers, great women.
In late June, we will celebrate the culmination of the program, a day awaited by all the women who have been part of this session because for the first time, we meet in person, and we will cross the screen that united us for almost 3 months. The graduation celebration will take place at Cúbico rooftop in Soho, an outdoor space with an incredible view of the NYC summer sunset and skyline. Join us and enjoy a diverse gastronomy (almost as diverse as our community), music, presentations, and a fun and unforgettable atmosphere!
Thank you NWNY, thanks to Arielle, and to all the people who make it possible for our fears as immigrant women to become hope and opportunity for the new. I cannot end without recalling the infinite value that having crossed paths with NWNY has for me because behind this name, there is a woman who, with the support and invaluable work of her team, has managed to build a community of empowered women, has managed to stand out and make known stories of unique women. That woman can be described with many words; I choose to describe her as Arielle Kandel: representation of opportunity! See you at the next series of We Speak We LEAD!

¿Qué es ser una mujer que llega o vive en New York en búsqueda de nuevas oportunidades?
- Soy profesional, pero no hablo inglés fluido.
- Hablo un poco ingles, pero no soy profesional y no se como ingresar al campo laboral en una ciudad como New York.
- Me puedo comunicar en inglés, pero no se como hacer relaciones interpersonales con un enfoque laboral.
Probablemente estos son pensamientos que como mujer inmigrante te haces cuando vienes en busca del sueño americano, o porque por cosas de la vida simplemente terminas viviendo en la capital del mundo o en la Gran Manzana.
No importa de qué país eres, o qué religión practicas, New York es tan diverso y multicultural que aunque sientas que sus enormes calles, edificios y los mares de gente te van a tragar, es solo un pequeño mundo dentro de nuestro universo, con grandes y asombrosas oportunidades esperando por ti y por mi. Y me incluyo porque también soy inmigrante como tú. Llegué hace cuatro años, sin saber cómo comenzar o cómo retomar lo que venía haciendo en mi país, profesional y académicamente.
Con un nivel de mi idioma nativo (español) altamente profesional, y un nivel de inglés medio que me permitía solo conversar sobre la cotidianidad con mis amigas, me preguntaba al igual que tú querida amiga, cómo volver a trabajar? ¿Se puede trabajar aquí?
Y es que abrirse la oportunidad a conocer nuevas personas en esta maravillosa ciudad, es la primera ventana para todas las puertas que luego se comienzan a abrir. Soy una gran buscadora de comunidades y exploradora de culturas que siempre me sirven como puente para cruzar nuevos caminos intelectuales y profesionales. Así conocí la comunidad de New Women New Yorkers. A través de una amiga, ingresé a uno de los diferentes programas con el único fin de volver a aprender a trabajar en este país. (Aquí puedo sugerir que podemos agregar mi primer blog para crear una secuencia o sincronía de la historian).
Hoy creo que lo más emocionante de haber participado en NWNY como una “alumna o aprendiz” es dar un testimonio de valentía y confianza y decir que sí puedes volver a comenzar, que sí puedes aprender más de lo que sabes. Que sí hay oportunidades aunque no tengas dinero. Que somos inmigrantes pero New York nos abraza, nos acoge y nos da un lugar pero tenemos que estar dispuestas a buscarlo con entusiasmo. Pero sin duda alguna escribo esto para extender una cálida invitación para que conozcas los diferentes programas que ofrece NWNY, entre esos, We Speak We LEAD, un programa gratuito en línea de desarrollo de la fuerza laboral y aprendizaje de inglés profesional para mujeres inmigrantes que se ofrece a través de una colaboración de New Women New Yorkers y We Speak NYC en la Oficina de Asuntos de Inmigrantes del Alcalde.
Hoy, soy yo, otra inmigrante que hace parte del equipo de trabajo de NWNY, específicamente en el programa We Speak We LEAD de la temporada de primavera 2022. Oportunidad que personalmente le agradezco a Arielle Kandel fundadora de NWNY, por creer en mí y permitirme hoy ser parte de su equipo. Un equipo de mujeres estupendas!
He sido testigo de una serie de 2 meses de 16 talleres interactivos de preparación para el trabajo que apoya y prepara alrededor de 25 participantes de diferentes partes del mundo en búsqueda de ingresar a la fuerza laboral de la ciudad de Nueva York o para seguir una educación vocacional o superior, y que los ayuda a mejorar su inglés profesional y ganar confianza.
De manera similar al programa LEAD insignia de New Women New Yorkers, la participación en We Speak We LEAD brinda acceso a prácticas grupales y sesiones de trabajo en red con empresas asociadas y profesionales, y apoyo individual en forma de creación de currículums, preparación para entrevistas y asesoramiento profesional.
Acaso no era todo esto lo que has estado buscando o lo que te has estado preguntando?
Como parte del equipo de apoyo de We Speak We LEAD, desde la primera sesión sobre el programa, me emocionó recordarme y verme en cada una de las mujeres que se postularon para pertenecer a esta increíble comunidad. Algunas mujeres tímidas, otras silenciosas y expectantes, mientras que otras estaban tan emocionadas y llenas de preguntas salvadoras como en la cúspide de una alta montaña viendo un panorama esperanzador mientras escuchaban a Arielle Kandel hablar más sobre el desarrollo y contenido de los talleres.
Durante las clases o talleres, también he asumido un rol de apoyo a mis compañeras, Jan, Montse y Talita. Y me he convertido en los oídos y ojos que sobrevuelan cada taller los martes y jueves de 10 am a 12:pm y a decir verdad, me concentro en las respuestas y opiniones o comentarios de cada una de las participantes, todas con historias tan diferentes pero que se unen al final con una palabra que se llama “sueños”.
Entre las actividades grupales, ellas abren espacio para compartir la felicidad que sienten de ser parte de la comunidad NWNY, son mujeres inspiradoras, interesantes, con aportes asombrosos y altamente valiosos. Lo más conmovedor es que cuando alguna de ellas participa y comparte las tareas, las demás al unísono aplauden y agradecen sentirse inspiradas a través de las experiencias entre sí mismas. We Speak We LEAD, une culturas, nos une como mujeres, no divide ni genera competencia, y esto es lo que te llevas en el corazón cuando has terminado el programa. Un grupo increíble y diverso de amigas que se convierten en tu familia, como ellas mismas lo dicen. Estoy segura de que cada una de estas mujeres puede llegar a donde se lo propongan, algunas muy buenas escritoras, poetas, coaching, abogadas, enfermeras o doctoras en los mejores hospitales, docentes, artistas, o cualquier cosa que se propongan porque tienen todo el potencial para ser grandes mujeres Neoyorkinas.
El programa de WSWL se ofrece en asociación con la Oficina de Asuntos de Inmigrantes del Alcalde de la Ciudad de Nueva York y We Speak NYC. A ellos gracias, con el apoyo y respaldo del estado creo que la comunidad de New Women New Yorkers, ha logrado crecer y congregar más mujeres que pueden aportar al avance no solo de la ciudad y el país, sino al fortalecimiento de la autoconfianza femenina de encontrar y generar oportunidades para comenzar desde nuestra experiencia y no desde cero.
En junio celebramos la culminación del programa, un día esperado por todas las mujeres que hemos hecho parte de esta sesión porque por primera vez nos reunimos en persona, y traspasamos la pantalla que nos unió durante casi 3 meses. La celebración de graduación se realizó en un mirador llamado Cúbico en Soho, con una vista increíble! En pleno atardecer de verano en New York. Disfrutar de una gastronomía diversa como todas nosotras, música, presentaciones y un ambiente divertido e inolvidable!
Gracias NWNY, gracias a Arielle y a todas las personas que hacen posible que nuestros temores de mujeres inmigrantes, se conviertan en una esperanza y oportunidad a lo nuevo y a lo más exquisito de comenzar desde la experiencia que todas traemos de donde vengamos. No puedo terminar sin recordar el valor infinito que tiene para mí haberme cruzado con NWNY, porque detrás de este nombre, hay una mujer que con el apoyo y el invaluable trabajo de su equipo, ha logrado construir una comunidad de mujeres empoderadas, ha logrado destacar y dar a conocer historias de mujeres únicas. A esa mujer se le puede describir con muchas palabras, yo escojo describirla como Arielle Kandel: representación de la oportunidad! Nos vemos en la próxima sesión de We Speak We LEAD!
