On Saturday, September 29, New Women New Yorkers invited us to the pre-release of their successful storytelling program for immigrant women in partnership with The Moth.

In Brooklyn, we were received by a beautiful fall sunset, on a terrace with a scenic view of Manhattan, which served as a backdrop for eight incredible women of different nationalities, ages, and backgrounds to share true stories about themselves.

One by one, armed only with a microphone, they shared part of their past lives or their new lives as New Yorkers, fragments of their experience with sometimes cheerful, and sometimes heartbreaking nuances. We laughed, we reflected, and we were moved.

New York is a city where everyone comes to accomplish a dream; these women are no exception. New Women New Yorkers’ storytelling program seeks to be an empowering tool for immigrant women, who through a crafting and theatrical training and exercise build confidence and communication skills. They were not the only ones empowered by the experience. It was also a markedly transformative experience for us all, the audience; after listening to their stories, we left feeling more powerful and thinking … if they could make it, we can all.

All these stories will land very soon in Manhattan. We invite you to attend the one-and-only public performance of our storytellers, Stories That Move Us, on October 15 at LMHQ. Visit our Eventbrite page for more information and tickets. And see our Facebook page for more photos from the evening.
