Latest news

WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS
Last month we launched our LEAD workforce development Summer series at the NYPL Mid-Manhattan Library, with 12 new participants from 9 countries including Brazil, Cameroon,  Honduras, and South Korea.

In August we hosted our first mock interview session with a group of professionals from Bank of America for nine graduates of our LEAD workforce development program for immigrant women. Our participants practiced their job interview skills, built confidence, and received practical feedback to pursue their professional goals. Grateful for this opportunity!

We were also back at Google with a group of 20 participants for our annual visit of their NYC offices. In addition to visiting their incredible space and learning about Google’s workplace culture, we received job search advice and inspiration from an incredible panel of 5 talented women Googlers, followed by time for 1-on-1 connections and networking. Thank you to Ben Kabatznik for planning this meaningful visit year after year, and to Anees, Carly, Joanne, Katharina, and Sam for sharing their expertise and inspiring all of us!

Congrats to LEAD graduates Anna from Russia and Oumie from Gambia for securing prestigious scholarships for higher studies from the Sotheby’s Art Institute and Chevening!

We are also very proud of LEAD graduate Sara from Ecuador for becoming officially a NYS chaplain and pursuing her goal to counsel abused women, and for securing an Adult Literacy Tutor volunteer position at Mixteca in Brooklyn – Learn more about Sara’s story here.

COMMUNITY BUILDING PROGRAMS
For the 2nd time, our Community Mixer this month was dedicated to financial literacy and wellbeing. We learned about credit score and credit cards, and how to manage debt. Thank you to Kathy Evans and Jane Kenyon for facilitating this important workshop!

Our Cultural Trip this month took place in Central Park and was led by one of our LEAD graduates, Crisna. Crisna talked about Stoicism and how applying its principles can help us increase our self-control and strength, and facilitated a short yoga exercise.

OTHER NEWS
In August we held a series of Summer trainings for our Program Team at the Centre for Social Innovation, including for workshop facilitators, resume builders, and career counselors.

Trainings provided an opportunity for volunteers to debrief and share their experience and feedback working with our participants, and to learn more, practice, and improve their facilitation, resume building, and career counseling skills through a range of brainstorming sessions, case-studies, and role-plays.

Learn more about two of our recent storytelling graduates, Juliana and Laila from Brazil, who were interviewed by Guardian Life, one of New Women New Yorkers’ key partners and financial supporters.
