NWNY’s latest Meetup and upcoming LEAD series
Written by Jahaida Hernández Jesurum
On February 9, New Women New Yorkers held its second Meetup — the first of 2016 — focused on an important skill: networking.
Immigrant women from every corner of the world attended the event. Some new faces and others already familiar to the organization gathered to take part in exercises to learn and practice how to approach and connect with people at events and become expert networkers, and to share their experiences in the New York City workplace.
The event was presented by NWNY’s CEO & Founder Arielle Kandel and LEAD Program Coordinator Mia Olesen. Previous LEAD graduates from the Allerton series took the opportunity to present their final project, an educational video about cyberbullying. Other graduates from the fall mid-Manhattan series also introduced their project, a photo and storytelling exhibit called “Real People. Real Lives. Women Immigrants of New York.” It will be held at the Centre for Social Innovation on March 24, in honor of Women’s History Month.
Get involved: New LEAD Program series in 2016
For most of us, February is the month during which we reevaluate our more ambitious New Year’s resolutions to find a more realistic approach. A new job or career are usually at the top of people’s lists, but sometimes figuring out where to start is daunting and overwhelming.
If you’re a woman between the ages of 16 and 35, New Women New Yorkers has outlined an amazing agenda for the year that could help with some of these resolutions. Continuing our partnership with The New York Public Library, we’re launching three new series of our free LEAD professional development program for young women immigrants, which combines skills training, teamwork, and leadership development.
Through a series of workshops, participants improve their computer and technology skills and learn how to write a great résumé and step up their LinkedIn profile, among other things (like networking!).
The three new LEAD series will launch this Spring at the following NYPL locations and dates:
- Series 1 at the Chatham Square Library (Manhattan): Wednesday, 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., from March 2 to April 20
- Series 2 at the Mid-Manhattan Library (Manhattan): Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., from March 11 to April 29
- Series 3 at the Allerton Library (Bronx): Saturday, 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., from April 2 to May 21
