January news: Recent highlights and much more to come in 2019
Professional development programs
Another LEAD series completed in December at the NYPL Mid-Manhattan library, with 14 participants completing the workforce development series. They will be able to continue their learning and practice in the coming months with our mock interview sessions, a panel discussion, field visits, and with 1-on-1 resume review and career counseling.
We’re opening enrollment for two new LEAD series this Winter at our regular Mid-Manhattan and Chatham Square library locations – Help us spread the word in your communities by sharing our online sign up form and our flyers (here and here).
This December we also took a group of our participants to visit the Chelsea office of Google. We had a fabulous walking tour in the colorful offices, and an insightful panel discussion with 4 female Google employees about entering the workforce, being a woman in tech, and other important topics related to job search and career development.
Community building and storytelling
Our cultural trip this month took us to Rebel Women and other exhibits at the Museum of the City of New York in East Harlem. We held a Holiday Community Mixer at our Centre for Social Innovation base, to celebrate our Fall 2018 LEAD graduates and begin planning for 2019 community gatherings.
New Women New Yorkers was the featured organization at the show This Alien Nation this December, a celebration of immigration at the iconic Joe’s Pub at The Public Theater, hosted by Sofija Stefanovic. One of our storytellers, Tianrui Ding, shared her story!

Thank you to all our volunteers for their contribution, New Women New Yorkers wouldn’t be possible without them!
Our LEAD and other workforce development and networking programs will receive the support of Con Edison in the coming year – Thankful and excited to start this new partnership.
We are also super grateful for the renewed support of the Knisely Family Foundation for our LEAD and LEAD for New Moms professional development programs.

“Finding work in New York was difficult at the beginning, and not only because you have to adapt to a new country with a different language. You also have to face the fact that hiring managers are worried about resumes with only international experience.
They don’t know if you can speak English properly, what your immigrant status is, or if you can adapt to US work culture.”
